Financial counselling support for those facing financial hardship in the aftermath of Cyclone Alfred

Financial Counselling Australia (FCA) is reminding those who may be impacted by Cyclone Alfred, there is free financial counselling available.

“Weather disasters can lead to unexpected financial problems, and some may find themselves in financial hardship,” said Louise Hayes, FCA’s National Coordinator of Disaster Recovery.

“It’s important to know there are financial counsellors who can help those affected navigate the financial challenges that can arise in the aftermath of a disaster,” Ms Hayes said.

“They can help you understand your options, negotiate with creditors, and take practical steps toward financial recovery.”

Financial counsellors offer guidance to those experiencing financial difficulties. They can help people negotiate hardship payment options for their mortgage, utility bills and other household bills. They are able to provide advice on insurance concerns once a claim has been lodged and can also assist with applications for available grants, ensuring you don’t have to navigate financial stress alone.

Financial counsellors are different to financial planners and advisors, and they do not hand out grants, emergency payments or make insurance claims on your behalf.

Financial counselling is:

  • Free – There’s no cost to access support.
  • Confidential – Your privacy is protected.
  • Non-judgemental – Financial counsellors are here to listen and guide NOT judge.
  • Available to all – You don’t need to meet any eligibility criteria to receive assistance.

“Recovery takes time, and financial concerns can add to the pressure.”
